Dieter Weise is originally from Sault Ste. Marie. He studied drawing at Interlochen Arts Academy, painting at Lansing Community College, and writing at Newschool University, in New York City. He began painting at the age of seventeen and started painting landscapes outdoors a couple years later. Most of Mr. Weise's works are begun and completed in "Plein air" or, "open air": A French term for paintings done outdoors, on the spot. In the U.P., plein air painting often involves tolerating mosquitoes, deer flies, beach flies, and blowing sands. In winter, winds topple canvasses, snowfall conceals brushes, and the oil paint grows thick. On the other hand, the winter fortifies endurance, the summer days are long and permit lengthy painting sessions, and the places depicted can be seen nowhere else. Mr. Weise has been painting in the eastern U.P. for a few years now, often at preferred fishing holes and camping sites, preferring to paint wild places, those places left free from human intervention.
