"At the time of this incredible photo , my lifehood was in sales. I traveled many miles including crossing the Mackinac Bridge six times a week. One Tuesday morning in late June of 1999, I noticed the dense fog rolling in and out while traveling east on US2. As I was crossing the bridge, I noticed to the east - near Mackinac Island, a large ship without its sails up. I thought I would see it better once I was in Mackinaw City. Since I carry my camera with me at all times, I decided to use my 300 mm zoom lens to see the ship better. As I was watching the ship through the fog, I noticed the sails were going up and the ship headed west towards the bridge. Thats when I realized I had something special that may never happen again in my lifetime! I then noticed that I had only one picture left on my roll of film. I waited patiently as it neared the bridge with the fog rolling in and out. Once it started under the bridge, I snapped the award winning photo!
When I received my photos, I opened up the package and the first picture I saw was the last one on the roll - the bridge, the ship, and fog -- WOW -- it literally took my breath away!
In 2003, the Mackinac City Visitors Bureau ran a photo contest of the Mackinac Bridge for anyone interested. Prizes would be awarded for 1st through 4th. A friend talked me into entering the contest.
Labor Day morning of 2003, during the annual Bridge Walk, I received a phone call from the radio station which was doing a live broadcast at the south end of the bridge. They let me know that out of 1,200 entries, my photo took 1st place! That's when I decided to market and share this print with the world. Lets celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Bridge that couldn't be built. |
